Criticism Containing Books Magelano žygis
I really enjoyed this biography of Magellan, (although the more recent biography by Laurence Bergreen is better). Zweig, who was apparently a very popular writer in the 1930s, has a gift for sweeping you up in the glory (and occasional folly) of Magellan's great voyage. He fought mutiny, storms, seemingly impossible navigational difficulties, hunger, despair, locals who didn't like being pushed around by Europeans, and the daunting and unanticipated immensity of the Pacific Ocean itself, but the

I choose this book because many years ago I read several books by Stefan Zweig (Czech translations) and I liked them a lot. It may be that my taste has changed or that Zweig's style is more suited for fiction than for historical works. I think Magallanes and his time are pictured vividly and probably quite accurately. For me it was also good to be reminded how deeply religious people and the society were, how ridiculously high was the price the early explorers paid for their discoveries and how

Outstanding book to improve knowledge of the history of the Western civilisation, through the contributions of Spain and Portugal

Was die Weisesten vermuteten seit tausenden Jahren, was die Gelehrten träumten, nun ist es durch den Mut eines einzelnen Gewißheit geworden: rund ist die Erde. Denn siehe, ein Mensch hat sie umrundet.Having enjoyed Zweig's Schachnovelle last year, I was glad to find his biography on Fernão de Magalhães - better known as Magellan - and the historic circumnavigation of the globe. The first half of the book - in which Zweig describes Magellan's earlier travels to the East and to Morocco, his choice

I didn't want to get swamped by too much dates and information but I wanted to learn something so I found this book perfect. The style is very light and you can tell if author is writing about facts, is he making educated guesses or if he is just using his imagination. I learned a lot of new things and even though some parts seemed like could be more developed I enjoyed this book a lot.I do wonder if there is any new data that makes this book obsolete (I mean it's 80 years old), but even if that

Eloquently written, this book tells the story of one man's obsession to risk all to find the western sea-route to the world's spice islands the Malukus. Achieving what Columbus had failed to do, Magellan proved the world was round and consequently one space. Thereby ushering in a new period of enlightened world thought.
