The copy I have is on loan from a friend, a Bavarian dedicated to this book. I see now why this and the other works of Karl May have become classics in Germany. Granted, some of the details of the American West have been misinterpreted and misrepresented, but May was hightly inventive and at all times captivating. Karl May was one of my favourite writers as a Kid. Even back then I knew that although he pretends to have lived all these adventures that was actually quite wrong. Rereading his books as an adult made me realise that as a politically correct, feminist modern adult, I can not like these books as much as I used to. Kara ben nemsi/ old shatterhand is overbearing, arrogant, patronising, know it all. He is racist and unbelievably annoyingly christian, to the extent that he wouldnt even consider
