If you want to know about whether Islam and women's rights are compatible, you should read this book. Shirin Ebadi doesn't present a cut-in-stone answer on this question but rather sheds light on the possibilities by describing her own fight for women's rights in Iran after the revolution. This book is not a political analysis. Ebadi uses a pure and mesmerising language that captures and unfolds the core difficulties to achieve equality in a country governed by sharia laws. What is needed toI read this pretty quickly. I am amazed at how far Iran dropped from a society full of women's rights to what it is today. This is a lesson in what can happen to a society that is/was advanced.
I read this book right after I finished 'Infidel'. Due to my overwhelming response to that book, no follow up could even compare. 'Iran Awakening' is the memoir of a woman who fights injustices in Iran.
