One shouldn't go into a Tad Williams epic fantasy romp expecting nonstop action or grimdark developments or a cookie-cutter plot. The series continues in a twisting, interesting manner. It sort of mashes together what Tad Williams succeeded at in his previous series. It's far flung and meandering in the way that Otherland was, but has the same deep sense of history and mystical mystery that Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn had.
