Ilustration In Favor Of Books Mirror to Damascus
Mirror to Damascus is a unique portrait of a city now obscured by recent upheavals, by one of the most indefatigable and popular of travel writers.
Described by the author as simply “a work of love,” Mirror to Damascus is an enthralling and fascinating history of Damascus from the Amorites of the Bible to the revolution of 1966, as well as being a charming and witty personal record of a city well-loved.
In explaining how modern Damascus is rooted in immemorial layers of culture and tradition, Thubron explores the historical, artistic, social and religious inheritance of the Damascenes in an amusing and perceptive manner, whilst interspersing the narrative with innumerable anecdotes about travellers of bygone days.

Damascus is a very old city, maybe the oldest one because it is believed as where the tomb of Abel is. Colin Thubron bicycled through its biblical hills, walked down the Roman roads especially the Street Called Straight, and roamed around the ruin of the Great Mosque of Ommayad and old churches. And now I know why Thubron's books became classics. He's not only travelling, he lived in the city. And his deep story about the history of the city mingled smoothly with his own travelling story. This book was like eating a rich, sticky chocolate pudding. The language was beautifully written, but so full of description that I couldn't read more than a few pages at a time before I needed to read something lighter or do something else altogether. Needless to say, it took me a lot longer to finish this book than its size would usually allow and I did struggle to get through some sections. Having said that, the chapters on historical narrative were fascinating and this book drew a very
Очерк-пътепис за Дамаск през 1967. И всичките няколко хиляди години преди това от убийството на Авел в крайградска пешера.
Today I sent an inlaid box to England. The shop owner was convinced I was sending it to a girl-friend.You will give me the address and I will post it to her, he said. He gazed at the name. Miss E. Horn. So she lives in Oxford. Is she a student there? No, she was not a student. In vain I told him she was my eighty-year old nanny. How old is she really? Is she beautiful?Yes, I said, certainly my nanny is beautiful. Then I will send her a little souvenir in the box. Perhaps I will write something. He
nice book
Well...I chose to bread this book about Damascus because of the present-day situation in Syria. I chose to read this book because it was written by Colin Thubron and HE is one of my favourite writers for the intelligent, well documented, sensitive and at time amusing way he writes about his travels. BUT...this book on Damascus was written in 1967, so many decades ago. Things have changed around the world, but not so much for Damascus! ALWAYS at crossroads, always a stage for some battle, for
